Caoping Village and Crown CavePerhaps, Caping Village is the best place to make an excursion to from Guilin because it is very charming and only 28 km from the downtown. The village is located in Caoping Hui Ethnic Country and mainly populated by Hui ethnic group.

The Hui people immigrated to Caoping around AD 960 -1279. The villagers still keep their ancestors' traditions today, they have their own Islamic Association and three mosques for their worship and prayer. Most of the villagers made their living by fishing in the past. They have practiced cormorant fishing method for generations, as it is not economically viable in the modern days, such fishing practice is only performed as the entertainment shows for tourists. The shows are regular features of the high season, or they can be arranged, along with riverboats for an evening's entertainment afloat. Now the villagers have changed their life style a lot for the tourism have been developed by the local government. And the viallage and its vicinity have become a tourist attraction - Crown Cave Scenic Spot.

Caoping Village and Crown CaveCaoping is a beautiful place, though, with some of the most sheer cliff faces on a river that you have seen on the far side. As you cross a mountain ridge and begin to descend into a sort of valley wherein the village is situated along the Li River, with these towering cliffs in the backdrop, a feeling of awe overcomes you. Besides the ancient village and the immediate scenery, the village also harbours several wild caves in a valley several kilometres out and the world-renowned Guanyan, or Crown Cave. This cave is over 36 kilometres long, a part of which has been developped. It has been given this name because the hill within which the cave is located resembles an ancient Chinese crown in purple and gold. A clear current of spring flows out from the cave to join with the Li River. The underground river is 12 kilometers long originating from Haiyan Mountain. You can see that the entrance of this cave is spacious and overhung with stalactites of various shapes. Stalagmites and stalactites are here and there inside the cave, grotesque and imposing. Equipped with an automatic light and sound system, the cave now looks more enchanting than ever. In addition, modern facilities such as a railroad car and sightseeing elevator provide convenience to visitors. If you have chance of rafting on the underground river inside the cave, you can enjoy the wonderful sights in the cave and experience the pleasure of exploration.

Caping Village is worth staying one night for the cormorants fishing show, the special night scene or the countryside flavor. There is a newly-opend 4-star hotel called Guilin Foggy Resort, which with the distinctive architectural style of north Guangxi ethnic customs. It is an ideal place for getting close to the nature and idyllic scenery. The tourists who stay in this hotel can be arranged to hike to explore the picutresque karst villages by the Li River if they like.
